The AAA Method®: How Valuable Is Your Talent?

Opinions are like...well, anyone you ask has a definitive favorite fitness instructor and they'll tell you when they teach and where and why they're so great. The problem is, as important as one person's opinion is, often times qualitative feedback isn't backed up by quantitative analysis.


The flame that would become the fire that would become the quantitative analysis I developed came to me after a few hundred group fitness classes and more than a year behind the desk working finance/strategy/data at Flywheel in New York City. I felt very strongly about the talent we had on our roster and felt it wasn't being matched in kind by the decisions that were made for scheduling or by the rhetoric from my peers about whose class was good, great, gruesome, etc.


I set out to develop the most objective framework for leveling the instructor playing field using actual performance data. Having an athletic background, two analytic platforms immediately influenced my project: sabermetrics in baseball and the BCS (formerly) in college football. Group fitness, after all, has more in common with team sports than it doesn't: the company itself has a roster of athletes whose lineup needs to be managed for the maximum output. If your cleanup hitter went on the disabled list, you wouldn't replace them with a scrawny utility infielder. If you're comparing the success of two teams, two instructors, you have to consider who they played, or the strength of their schedule.


Six months of iteration established the methodology behind the outputs, using actual performance data to evaluate metrics like:

...and dozens other points of reference along the way.


Maintaining a consulting-style role as I transitioned to actually becoming an instructor whose performance was under review, I first-hand experienced the levers that drove my algorithms and was exposed to more things that I initially ignored/discounted/omitted. Things like tenure and unique customers applied differently to each instructor and shone through as obvious drivers I only would have understood because of my experience cultivating a following.


After a year of only instructing and committing to my own individual success, I had an epiphany at an off-site influencer event that - while I fancy myself a highly talented performance artist and DJ - my most valuable skillset was that passion project I had in quantifying the success of people like me. It was something nobody else had considered, and something most people were fascinated by; so I came back, copyrighted my one-of-a-kind system, and am now helping businesses nationwide analyze their performance data, maximize their talent roster, and optimize their daily operations.
